Spectrometer, CMM and Projector Equipment

Each instrument answers a different question; equipment ownership is useful only when the inspection plan selects the appropriate method and records the result against a specification.

Material verification with a spectrometer

A spectrometer can compare alloy chemistry with the specified material range. Sampling plan, calibration/control samples and traceability to the incoming or melt lot determine how useful that reading is. Buyers should specify the alloy standard and whether a composition report is required with samples or shipments.

CMM inspection begins with datum alignment

A CMM can measure complex relationships, but the program must align the part according to the drawing datum reference frame. If the report uses convenient surfaces that do not represent assembly, the numbers may be precise yet unhelpful. Huabo reviews critical bores, mounting patterns, flatness and true position against the functional datum scheme.

Where an optical projector fits

Projectors are useful for suitable profiles, edge locations and smaller features that can be presented clearly to the optical system. They do not replace a CMM for every three-dimensional relationship. Method selection considers feature geometry, tolerance, repeatability and access.

What to include in an inspection request

Send a ballooned drawing or identify critical characteristics, required report format, sample quantity and material certificate expectation. State whether results are needed for first article, periodic production or every lot.
