CMM projector and gauge dimensional inspection for CNC machined die casting parts

Dimensional Inspection for Die Casting Parts

Dimensional inspection answers a different question from material inspection: will the part assemble correctly? In die casting projects, dimensions can be affected by mold design, shrinkage, trimming, CNC machining, drilling, tapping and surface finishing. Huabo plans dimensional inspection around the features that matter most to the buyer's assembly.

Dimensions That Usually Matter Most

FeatureWhy It MattersPossible Check Method
Hole positionControls assembly alignment and fasteningProjector, CMM, gauge or fixture check
Threaded holesPrevents fastening failure and reworkThread gauge, position check and visual burr inspection
Flat mounting surfaceSupports sealing, contact, heat transfer or machine assemblyCMM, flatness check or machining datum inspection
Profile and edge dimensionsControls fit with covers, enclosures or adjacent componentsProjector, caliper, gauge or sampling inspection
Machining datumDefines the reference for repeatable CNC operationsDrawing-based datum and fixture review

Inspection Planning for CNC Machined Castings

Many die casting parts need CNC machining after casting. Examples include CNC machined aluminum mounting panels, mechanical housings, communication enclosures and industrial brackets. For these parts, inspection should focus on the machined features that affect function, not every non-critical casting surface.

CNC machining capability and machining and inspection equipment should be reviewed together when the drawing includes tight tolerances, threads or assembly positions.

How Buyers Can Mark Critical Dimensions

  • Use clear tolerances on functional holes, threads, datum faces and mounting surfaces.
  • Mark which dimensions affect assembly and which are general casting dimensions.
  • Identify any dimensions that should be checked before surface finishing.
  • Provide mating part information if a fit check is more useful than measuring one dimension alone.

Dimensional Inspection Output

Inspection NeedPractical Output
Sample approvalCheck key dimensions before buyer confirms tooling or process direction
Mass production controlUse drawing-based sampling for critical features
Assembly risk reductionUse gauges or fixture checks when repeated fit matters

FAQ

Does every dimension need CMM inspection?
No. CMM should be used for critical or complex dimensions. Other features may be checked by projector, gauges, calipers or production sampling depending on the requirement.

When should dimensional inspection be planned?
It should be discussed before quotation when the part has assembly holes, threaded areas, flatness requirements or tight tolerance features.
