Die Casting Mold Storage and Tooling Control

What should follow a mold into storage

At the end of a run, the mold should not be treated as an anonymous steel block. The tool number, customer part number, alloy, last production date and maintenance status need to remain connected. Residual metal and release agent are removed as appropriate, moving components are checked, and exposed surfaces receive protection suitable for the expected storage period.

Mold ownership and engineering changes

For custom tooling, the commercial agreement should define ownership, normal maintenance responsibility, storage period and what happens if the part is revised. A drawing change can require an insert modification rather than a completely new mold, but only after the affected cavity, shutoff, ejector and cooling areas are reviewed. Questions buyers can ask before placing a repeat order

Confirm whether the mold is production-ready, whether the previous run produced any unresolved issue, and whether a short verification run is needed after a long idle period. If annual demand is uncertain, discuss spare inserts for wear-prone details and the lead time for major repair. These questions are more useful than asking only whether storage space exists.
