Pipe Elbow Housing Die Casting: Flow Path Burr Control, Wall Thickness and Pressure Test Planning
2026-07-06 09:52:41

A pipe elbow housing changes flow direction, connects fittings and often works close to pressure or fluid cleanliness requirements. For this type of aluminum die casting, buyers should review the inside flow path, wall thickness, threaded ports and cleaning plan, not only the external shape.

The internal flow path needs its own quality plan

External dimensions are easy to measure, but the internal elbow path can hide burrs, flash, sand-like residue from finishing or chips from machining. If the part carries air, oil or water, internal cleanliness becomes a functional issue. The buyer should state whether the passage must be visually checked, air blown, pressure tested or cleaned to a defined standard.

The casting design should also avoid unnecessary heavy sections around the bend. Uneven wall thickness can increase shrinkage risk and make pressure-related inspection more important.

FeatureFunctional riskRecommended control
Internal flow pathBurrs or chips affect flow and sealingDeburring, cleaning and visual or borescope check if needed
Wall thickness near bendShrinkage or weak pressure areaReview wall balance and gate/overflow plan
Threaded portFitting leakage or thread damageThread gauge, effective depth and coating cleaning
Sealing faceLeakage at fitting or gasketCNC machine and protect from scratches
Surface treatmentCoating residue enters portMask or clean ports after finishing

Pressure testing should be defined early

Not every pipe elbow casting requires pressure testing. However, if the part works in a pressure system, the RFQ should define test pressure, medium, holding time and acceptance standard. Sample-only testing and 100 percent production testing have very different fixture and cost implications.

Thread and fitting details matter

Thread type should be written clearly on the drawing. BSP, NPT, metric and customer-specific threads should not be assumed from appearance. If the fitting seals on the thread, sealing face or O-ring, the supplier needs to know this before machining and inspection planning.
