Flange Mount Support Base Die Casting: Flatness, Bolt Load and Machined Pad Protection
2026-07-06 09:52:39

A flange mount support base is often used as the connection point between a cast component and the customer assembly. The part must sit flat, accept bolt load and keep machined pads protected through finishing and shipping. If the base is distorted or the hole pattern is off, the whole assembly may need rework even when the casting appearance is acceptable.

Flatness is a functional requirement, not a cosmetic detail

The mounting face of a flange base controls how load is transferred into the machine frame. A raw casting face may be suitable for low-precision applications, but many OEM projects need CNC machining on the contact pad. The drawing should define flatness, datum, surface roughness and whether coating is allowed on the contact surface.

If the support base is tightened by several bolts, flatness and hole pattern should be checked together. A flat face with a poor bolt pattern can still create assembly stress.

Bolt load should guide rib and boss layout

When a flange base is tightened, the load does not stay only around the bolt. It travels through bosses, ribs and walls. A good casting design avoids sudden wall thickness changes and supports the bolt area with balanced ribs. If the base is used in vibrating equipment, the buyer should share the installation direction and expected bolt torque.

Protecting machined pads after CNC

Many defects happen after the expensive machining step. A machined pad can be scratched during deburring, coating, transport inside the factory or final packing. For export production, trays, separators or face protection should be considered when the surface is a functional contact face.
