A gearbox cover plate is a sealing and assembly part. It may look flat and simple, but oil leakage, bolt pattern error, coating build-up or scratches on the gasket face can create expensive rework. Buyers should define the gasket face, hole relationship and surface protection requirement before the supplier starts tooling and CNC fixture planning.

The gasket face should be treated as a functional surface. If it is raw cast, the drawing should allow the surface condition. If it is CNC machined, the buyer should define flatness, surface roughness and whether coating is allowed. A small dent or scratch on the contact face can matter more than a cosmetic mark on a hidden exterior wall.
When the cover plate has an O-ring groove, the groove width, depth, edge condition and no-coating rule should be stated clearly. These details are often missed in early quotation and then become sample problems.
| Control item | Possible issue | Recommended evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Gasket face | Oil leakage or uneven compression | Flatness and surface finish report after CNC |
| Bolt pattern | Cover shifts or gasket compresses unevenly | CMM or fixture check from functional datum |
| Threaded bosses | Fastener failure during tightening | Thread gauge and effective depth check |
| Rib and wall transition | Distortion around sealing face | Wall balance review before mold release |
| Finished surface | Coating affects fit or appearance | Masking confirmation and approved finish sample |
Checking each hole diameter is not enough. A gearbox cover plate is tightened by multiple bolts, so the hole pattern and sealing face work together. If the pattern is shifted, the cover may still assemble but load the gasket unevenly. This is why fixture inspection or CMM reporting from the functional datum is more useful than isolated manual checks.
Even a correctly machined gasket face can be damaged after machining. Deburring, coating, transfer and packing should protect the sealing area. For export parts, the supplier should avoid stacking machined faces against rough surfaces and should separate parts when the sealing face is exposed.
| RFQ detail | Why it matters | Recommended note |
|---|---|---|
| Seal type | Defines face and groove requirement | Gasket, O-ring, sealant or customer-specific seal |
| Flatness requirement | Controls oil leak risk | Mark on drawing with datum |
| Bolt information | Controls hole and boss design | Bolt size, torque and washer condition |
| Surface treatment | Affects sealing and appearance | Mask gasket face or define no-coating zones |
| Packing method | Protects machined contact surfaces | Separated packing or protective sheet |
