Ventilated Motor End Shield Die Casting: Airflow, Ribs and Burr Control
2026-06-22 10:14:40

A ventilated motor end shield has two jobs that must work together: it supports the motor assembly and allows airflow through the cover. This combination makes the part more sensitive than a simple closed cover because thin openings, ribs, bearing support and burr control all influence final performance.

Airflow openings are also manufacturing features

Vent slots reduce weight and support cooling, but they create thin edges that must fill properly during casting and be cleaned after trimming. If openings are too narrow or the wall transition is poor, defects may appear near the slot edges. If deburring access is difficult, sharp edges can remain and affect handling or assembly.

The buyer should tell the supplier which openings are functional airflow paths and which surfaces are visible after assembly. This helps the mold maker choose parting line, gate position and trimming method with fewer surprises.

Key control points for ventilated covers

Control pointWhy it mattersRecommended check
Vent slot fillingIncomplete fill weakens thin edge and affects appearanceReview mold flow and first sample edges
Burrs around openingsSharp burrs can damage wires or reduce perceived qualityDefine deburring standard and inspect by touch/visual sample
Bearing support areaAlignment affects motor running stabilityCNC machine the bearing seat and measure concentricity-related features
Rib layoutRibs support strength but can create local shrinkageBalance rib thickness and wall transition
Coated surfacePaint can bridge narrow slots or hide burrsInspect openings after coating, not only before coating

Why inspection after finishing matters

A ventilated end shield may look acceptable as a raw casting but change after coating. Coating thickness can build up around slots, and handling can damage thin edges. For this reason, final inspection should include opening cleanliness, visible surface condition, machined bearing area and packing protection.

Useful RFQ information

Provide airflow or opening function notes, bearing fit, mounting datum, coating requirement, acceptable burr standard and expected annual quantity. If the end shield works with a fan, rotor or wiring harness, share the clearance information so edge and slot controls can be planned correctly.
