A steering pump housing is not only an aluminum shell. It supports hydraulic or mechanical function, holds ports and sealing surfaces, and must keep shaft or bore relationships stable after casting and machining. For buyers, the project should be reviewed around pressure zones and alignment first, then around appearance and general casting cost.

If the housing carries fluid pressure, the supplier needs to know which cavities, ports and machined surfaces are pressure-related. A casting defect on a non-functional outside wall may be cosmetic, but a small defect near a pressure path can become leakage after machining. This is why pressure information belongs in the RFQ, not only in the final test plan.
Wall thickness around ports and bosses should be balanced carefully. Adding material can improve strength in some areas, but excessive local thickness can also increase shrinkage risk. A good DFM review checks whether the pressure zone, gate direction, venting, machining allowance and sealing surface can work together.
| Functional area | Risk if unclear | Recommended control |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure cavity | Hidden porosity may connect to fluid path | Confirm pressure requirement and whether leak testing is needed |
| Shaft or bearing bore | Misalignment can cause wear or noise | CNC machine from stable datum and inspect bore relationship |
| Threaded ports | Poor thread or coating contamination can leak | Define thread standard, depth, gauge and masking areas |
| Sealing face | Scratches or flatness error affect gasket seal | Machine, protect and inspect sealing surfaces after finishing |
| Mounting pads | Assembly stress changes pump alignment | Measure hole pattern and pad flatness from functional datum |
For pump housings, the final alignment is often created by CNC machining, not by raw casting alone. The casting must leave enough stock, while the machining fixture must reference surfaces that reflect the real assembly. If the fixture references a convenient but unstable raw edge, bore and port relationships may drift between batches.
Buyers should mark which bore or face is the primary datum and which features relate to it. This helps the supplier prepare the machining route and inspection method before sample production.
| Inspection item | Purpose | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Machined bore and face | Controls alignment and sealing | FAI report with datum reference |
| Port thread quality | Prevents assembly leakage | Thread gauge and depth records |
| Sealing surface condition | Protects gasket or O-ring contact | Flatness, roughness or visual sample standard |
| Leak test requirement | Validates pressure function | Test pressure, medium and acceptance criteria |
| Packing protection | Prevents damage after inspection | Protection of machined ports and sealing faces |
Send pressure condition, working medium, port standard, bearing or shaft information, sealing method, coating requirement, annual quantity and whether each part requires leak testing. If the housing is for automotive use, mention traceability and inspection record expectations.
