Mold Design and Tooling for Die Casting: Draft, Slides, Gate Position and Sample Approval
2026-07-16 10:08:47

Mold design and tooling decide much of the final die casting quality before the first sample is produced. Draft angle, parting line, slide structure, gate position, overflow and ejector marks all affect appearance, dimensional stability and CNC machining. Buyers should review tooling decisions early instead of waiting for sample problems.

Draft and parting line affect both production and appearance

Insufficient draft can make ejection difficult and increase surface damage. A poorly placed parting line may appear on a visible surface or interfere with sealing. Buyers should mark visible and functional surfaces so the supplier can arrange draft, parting line and ejector marks more reasonably.

Slide structureCreates undercuts and side holesIs the tolerance realistic after sliding action?
Gate positionAffects filling and cosmetic surfaceWill gate marks appear on visible areas?
Ejector marksCan affect appearance or sealingAre ejector areas approved?

Slides should be used for function, not hidden complexity

Slides are useful for side holes, undercuts and complex housing features, but they add tooling cost and maintenance. If a side feature can be changed to post-machining or redesigned for simpler tooling, the buyer and supplier should compare the total cost and risk.

Sample approval should connect casting and machining

A first sample should be reviewed for raw casting quality, machined features, finishing and assembly fit. If machining datums are not planned during tooling, the first sample may require repeated fixture changes. Tooling review and CNC review should therefore happen together.
