Mold design and tooling decide much of the final die casting quality before the first sample is produced. Draft angle, parting line, slide structure, gate position, overflow and ejector marks all affect appearance, dimensional stability and CNC machining. Buyers should review tooling decisions early instead of waiting for sample problems.

Insufficient draft can make ejection difficult and increase surface damage. A poorly placed parting line may appear on a visible surface or interfere with sealing. Buyers should mark visible and functional surfaces so the supplier can arrange draft, parting line and ejector marks more reasonably.
| Tooling decision | Why it matters | Buyer question |
|---|---|---|
| Draft angle | Controls release and surface damage | Are functional faces protected? |
| Slide structure | Creates undercuts and side holes | Is the tolerance realistic after sliding action? |
| Gate position | Affects filling and cosmetic surface | Will gate marks appear on visible areas? |
| Ejector marks | Can affect appearance or sealing | Are ejector areas approved? |
| Machining allowance | Controls CNC cleanup and cost | Is stock added only where needed? |
Slides are useful for side holes, undercuts and complex housing features, but they add tooling cost and maintenance. If a side feature can be changed to post-machining or redesigned for simpler tooling, the buyer and supplier should compare the total cost and risk.
A first sample should be reviewed for raw casting quality, machined features, finishing and assembly fit. If machining datums are not planned during tooling, the first sample may require repeated fixture changes. Tooling review and CNC review should therefore happen together.
| Checklist item | Purpose | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Visible surface map | Controls gate, ejector and parting line | Marked drawing |
| Functional datum | Supports machining and inspection | Datum scheme on drawing |
| Wall thickness review | Reduces shrinkage and filling problems | DFM comments |
| Slide review | Controls cost and tolerance risk | Tooling proposal |
| Sample approval plan | Links casting, CNC and finish | FAI and assembly check |
