A flange mount support base is a locating part. It may hold a motor, sensor, gearbox, pipe support or machine component. Because it controls how another part sits in the assembly, the casting must be reviewed around datum surfaces, boss strength and hole position rather than only around outside shape.

The mounting base usually has one or more faces that define assembly position. If the drawing does not clearly mark the datum, the supplier may choose a fixture reference that is convenient for machining but not ideal for final assembly. This can lead to holes that are correct individually but misaligned as a group.
Before tooling, the buyer should identify the primary mounting face, secondary locating feature and critical hole pattern. If the base must sit flat against another component, flatness and burr control around the contact face should be specified.
| Feature | Function | Control recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Primary mounting face | Defines how the base contacts the assembly | Machine if required and inspect flatness |
| Boss structure | Supports bolts or threaded inserts | Review wall transition and avoid heavy isolated mass |
| Hole pattern | Controls assembly position | Inspect from the correct datum instead of measuring holes separately |
| Rib support | Improves stiffness without excess weight | Align ribs with load path and casting flow |
| Exterior finish | Affects appearance and corrosion resistance | Define coating, masking and handling protection |
A thick boss may look strong, but it can create shrinkage or porosity near the screw area. A better design uses proper fillets, coring and rib connection so the boss carries load without becoming a heavy heat concentration. If threads are tapped after casting, machining allowance and thread depth must be planned before tooling.
If the part uses inserts, the supplier should know insert type, installation method and pull-out requirement. If the part uses direct tapping, the buyer should define thread gauge and minimum effective depth.
| Stage | Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Tooling design | Where will machining stock be reserved? | Protects flatness and hole accuracy after CNC |
| First setup | Which raw or machined face will the fixture reference? | Controls repeatability across batches |
| Hole machining | Are holes drilled, reamed or tapped? | Affects tolerance, thread quality and cycle time |
| Final inspection | Are holes checked as a pattern from datum? | Prevents false pass from isolated measurements |
| Finishing | Will coating affect contact faces or threads? | Requires masking or post-finish checking |
Send the assembly function, load direction, mating part information, critical datum, hole tolerance, thread requirement, finish, annual quantity and packaging need. If the part is used as a support base in industrial equipment, mention vibration or impact conditions because they may affect rib and boss review.
