Painting and Coating Die Casting Parts: Masking Areas, Adhesion Checks and Packing Control
2026-07-15 13:29:35

Painting and coating die casting parts is not only a color process. For aluminum and zinc die castings, coating thickness can affect threads, gasket faces, grounding areas, machined pads and assembly holes. Buyers should define which surfaces need protection and which surfaces must stay coating-free before approving samples.

Painting and coating die casting parts with masking and surface finish control

Masking areas should be marked on the drawing

A photo or short email note is not enough for repeat production. The best approach is to mark masking areas directly on the 2D drawing, especially around threads, sealing faces, contact pads, bearing seats and grounding points. This helps the supplier control the same areas during every batch.

Coating control table

AreaRiskRecommended control
Threaded holesCoating build-up blocks fastenersMask or clean threads after coating
Gasket faceUneven compression or leakageKeep coating-free if the drawing requires sealing
Grounding padElectrical continuity failureMask contact area or test continuity
Visible surfaceColor, gloss or texture disputeApprove a finished sample and define cosmetic zones
Machined padAssembly height changesProtect after CNC machining and before packing

Adhesion and appearance should be checked separately

A coating can look good but still have weak adhesion, or it can pass adhesion while failing visible appearance. Buyers should define both requirements when the part is exposed to handling, vibration, moisture or outdoor conditions. Salt spray, cross-cut adhesion or simple sample approval may be selected depending on the project risk.

Export packing matters after finishing

Finished die casting parts are easy to scratch during transport. Packing should prevent parts from rubbing each other, especially when the surface is painted, powder coated or polished. For visible automotive and equipment parts, separated packing is often worth the small extra cost.
