Automotive Transmission Cover Die Casting: Oil Passage Cleanliness, Bolt Pattern and Sealing Face Control
2026-07-05 14:42:27

An automotive transmission cover is not a decorative cover. It may close an oil cavity, locate sensors, support brackets and control the sealing relationship with the transmission body. For buyers, the key risk is that the casting looks acceptable but fails because of leakage, poor bolt pattern control or contamination inside oil passages.

Sealing face control starts before CNC machining

The sealing face is usually finished by CNC machining, but the casting design still decides whether the face can be machined cleanly and consistently. If the local wall is too thin, the face may distort after machining. If the section is too heavy, shrinkage or porosity may appear near the gasket area. The drawing should mark the sealing surface, flatness requirement, roughness and whether coating is allowed on the face.

When the part uses an O-ring groove, the supplier also needs groove width, depth, edge radius and inspection method. A general note such as "no leakage" is not enough for quotation or process planning.

Critical control points for transmission covers

Bolt patternUneven tightening can create gapsCMM or fixture check from functional datum
Oil passagesChips or burrs may contaminate transmission oilDeburring and cleaning record

Cleanliness is a functional requirement

Transmission-related parts often need higher cleanliness control than ordinary structural housings. Burrs around oil passages, chips after tapping, or loose blasting media can create real field problems. If the buyer has a cleanliness standard, it should be included in the RFQ. If not, the supplier and buyer should agree at least on deburring, air blowing, visual inspection and protection after cleaning.

Sample approval should simulate assembly risk

A first article report should cover the sealing surface, bolt pattern, thread depth, oil passage edges and appearance standard. If the cover mates with a gasket or machined housing, assembly trial feedback is very valuable. Measuring the part alone may not reveal whether the gasket is compressed evenly or whether fasteners pull the cover out of position.
